About 120 miles east of Moscow, lies one of Russia’s more popular tourist destinations, Vladimir. With buildings that date back to the 1200s, the city is part of the Golden Ring—ancient cities that preserve the most important events in Russian history.
But look closer, and you’ll find among Vladimir’s medieval cathedrals and arches some thriving modern industry. Electrical and chemical factories, food processing plants, and two large thermal power stations keep the local economy humming. While Vladimir Electromotor Plant (VEMP) keeps motors turning—throughout the city, Russia, and beyond.
VEMP is the largest manufacturer of induction three-phase electric motors in the country. You can find the company’s name in oil pumps, refrigerators, hoists, and even nuclear plants. The 60-year-old firm is the authorized Russian representative of Hitachi, too.
Market leaders know that you don’t stay ahead by remaining complacent, however. That’s why VEMP recently re-evaluated its product development processes. How could engineering optimize productivity and decrease time from design to manufacture? The company looked closer at its CAD system for answers.
As an AutoCAD customer, VEMP found that it took about a year to develop a new motor. The company thought it could do better. So it switched to PTC Creo Parametric and PTC Creo Simulate.
PTC Creo Parametric is the most powerful and flexible 3D CAD software on the market. Product developers use it to quickly and easily create 3D models of any part or assembly, create manufacturing drawings that reflect their 3D designs, and take advantage of comprehensive surfacing capabilities.

“Using the previous software we spent about 1 year on the design process of new electro motors,” says Oleg Kruglikov, Deputy General Director on Business Development, VEMP. “With the first project of design of the new motor with PTC Creo, it took us to the final design stage in 1.5 months! PTC Creo and PTC Creo Simulate have definitely optimized our product development cycle.”
That amounts to an 87.5% decrease in design time. Overall, the company reports its reduced cycle time by a factor of 3 to 4 times since switching from AutoCAD to PTC solutions.
